SAVE TEH MENS!

Now that they've linked HPV to cancer in men, it's suddenly more important to get people vaccinated.

When it was only linked to cancer in females, it was, "Those dirty whores deserve it for being sluts! No vaccines for you!"

I think the argument from Governor Goodhair down here in Texas was that the 11 year old girls shouldn't get it because then they'll think its safe to have sex.

To be fair, the Canadian news report you've linked does mention that many provinces (mine included) already have a vaccination available for girls, so the call is to expand the vaccination program, not initiate one.

Hmm. The article says they are already funding the vaccine for girls, and that they're now calling for funding it for boys. I know a lot of people have been fighting the vaccine for various reasons; some of which were questionable indeed (others not so questionable) but it doesn't strike me as being ZOMG save teh men and they're the only ones who matter. Of course I guess it remains to be seen what the questionable anti-vaccine people do with this knowledge. Is there anything on that yet?

Um yeah, I really dont' see what the problem is.

So we can't have 11 year old girls think it's safe to have sex, but it's ok when we're talking about boys?

I agree with what Rio is saying, suddenly now we can talk about the HPV vaccine, cause it isn't going to give girls free liscence to slut around. Of course, when we know when boys slut around, they're called men or players, that it's seen as positive. What BS.

mrs.millur, unfortunately here in the States we're not so enlightened and we'd rather pretend our daughters are vestal virgins than try and prevent, say, cancer.

Heather-
Sadly, that's true here, too. And a reason why many parents will choose not to offer their daughters the vaccine. But... wow... to have that decision made for me (and my daughters) by politicians? That's worth getting angry over. Please continue.

Well, parents are already required to vaccinate their kids for things like rubella, measles, etc. Why should this be different? Having a large part of the population immune to the illness will (hopefully) eventually stamp it out, a la Smallpox.

Yeah, I did a pile of research on this for one of my courses last year and it was UNBELIEVEABLE the crap people were spewing in an attempt to stop the vaccine being made available to teen and pre-teen girls.

The whole point of it is that it's a *vaccine*. It's very highly effective -- I can't remember the exact figure, but I think in the region of 90% -- if you get it BEFORE you get infected with the HPV strains it protects against. It does precisely fuck-all if you're infected already. And the strains it targets (I think 6 and 8?) are the ones responsible for 70% OF CERVICAL CANCER IN WOMEN. But don't give the vaccine to my daughter, because she's never going to have sex ever ever ever ever!

I cannot. even.
